Off-Grid Refuse System

Guide to SHTF... Oops, the Compost Toilet

(SurvivalDaily.com) – Going off-grid is a step many people take on their path to self-reliance. Once off-grid, however, you’ll need to be able to sustain yourself without the help of city municipalities. That’s where a compost toilet comes in handy.

Being disconnected from the city sewer system is an issue that’s easy to overlook when going off the grid, so you’re going to need a substitute. But why a compost toilet? Well, there are several reasons to choose from, such as very low power consumption, no water needed to flush, the option to dispose of kitchen waste in it and no more having to plunge a clogged toilet (probably the biggest pro, honestly).

Compost toilet maintenance is simple; you just can’t use any products that will kill the microbes that break down your waste. Also, don’t throw medicine in the compost toilet as certain medicines will also kill microbes. People who’ve been on antibiotics for more than 6 months should also refrain from using the toilet.

You can elect to make your own composting toilet, or you can spend some money and get one that’s more modernized. Whatever you choose, be sure to check the laws in your state as some have different rules and regulations regarding compost toilets.

You could always use a 5-gallon bucket to create your compost toilet, but we suggest you use your bucket for this instead.

Do you have any experience using a composting toilet? Would you ever consider installing one? Reply to your email and let us know. We would love to hear from you!
