(SurvivalDaily.com) – Raising chickens is a great way to provide food for your family and work toward self-reliability. In order to keep the chickens happy, however, they need to have a special place to lay their eggs, called a nesting box. Nesting boxes will give the chickens a dedicated location to roost, and it will make gathering eggs a lot easier.
While there are some expensive nesting boxes on the market, you don’t have to break the bank to get them. For example, as the following video shows, a 5-gallon bucket can work just fine with a little modification:
When it comes to creating a nesting box, the only limitation you have is your imagination. Of course, money plays a factor as well, but you can easily create a nesting box from materials around the house.
For example, milk crates are often tossed to the side and forgotten or thrown away altogether, but they can make the perfect nesting box.
Here are a few other options you have when it comes to making your own nesting box:
- Kitty litter buckets.
- Plastic totes.
- Litter boxes.
- Plastic storage bins.
Of course, you can always use repurposed nesting boxes or shelves. You can even use large plastic bowls! There really is no limit to what you can use for a nesting box; chickens aren’t particularly picky and just want an area where they feel safe to lay their eggs.
